Prepositions save lives (and so do you)

Perhaps you've seen this clever reminder that punctuation does, in fact, save lives: "Let's eat grandma!" vs. "Let's eat, grandma!" This former journalist thinks this is funny.

Punctuation matters, but prepositions do, too. I often notice improperly used grammar and fix it in my head. For example, please don't end a sentence with a preposition. Perhaps I need a new hobby.

Why a grammar lesson in a mission blog? Because sometimes we misuse prepositions when we think about stewardship. We might not realize our grammatical error, but when used correctly, stewardship prepositions do save lives. Let me explain.

When people think of giving money for the work of God, they often speak of giving to the church. We put our check in the offering plate as it passes by or we set up electronic giving through the church office. It looks like we're giving to the church. That's the body to whom we write the check.

Yet our giving doesn't stop there, so why should our prepositions?

When we share our treasures in the context of a local congregation, we're not giving to the church, but through the church. A portion of our offering does go toward staff and building expenses, to be sure, but a portion of all offerings made through ELCA congregations go on through the synod, through the churchwide organization and throughout the world, to make a difference. This is called mission support.

When you give through the church, your mission support does change lives and save lives. In 2013, more than $48 million was sent through synods to support ministries through the churchwide organization. This included supporting new and renewing congregations; expanding youth and young adult ministries; preparing new church leaders; accompanying churches around the world, including about 200 missionaries; assisting global companions in building their capacity for mission in 90 countries; and supporting the response to poverty, hunger, violence, disease and disasters. Recently, our wider church was able to send more than $185,000 to fight the Ebola crisis is western Africa.

When you give through your congregation, you are making a difference. Thank you for your mission support. Thank you for giving through the church. Prepositions save lives, and so do you.
